As the group begins to exchange information and introduces Winter to Aramades. Thakharad reaches out to Siegmeyer that Inora has called for help and starts towards the luggage car. Inora tells Dalf that she doesn't want to fight, he seems reluctant to fight as well but attempts to use a wand on her. She counterspells that and attempts to hypnotic pattern him which fails. Siegmeyer yells there is trouble and starts back. Beyro uses his cloak to teleport himself and Áinfean to Inora. The others also move towards the rear car. Beyro goes to stab Dalf though Inora says "No!" where Áinfean moves in front of her and threatens Dalf. Dalf attempts to leave (getting stabbed by Beyro again) and lands on the roof of the car. Beyro moves to pursue while Áinfean checks on Inora. Inora tries to explain that even though he is attempting to kidnap her she doesn't want him hurt because they know each other from before. Beyro gets to the roof in time to see Dalf spread a pair of wings which pulls him off the back of the train, Inora sees him flying as he goes the other way.
Once the group is together they attempt to figure out what's going on. Inora fills them in on what she learned. Primarly that Dalf is part of "The Gathering" which is led by "The Elders" and that he knows her and was surprised (and maybe a touch hurt) that she didn't know him. He wanted her to go with him and was willing to use force when she said no. Beyro recognises these names but says it might not be his place to say, However Umbero d'Lyrander steps out and says it is his.
Umbero takes the other d'Lyrandars to his private car while everyone else gambles. Once there he informs the girls that they were chosen as relatively unknown members of the house for an espionage mission against a group of cultists to the Dragon Below called The Gathering. However they lost contact about 6 months in. After a few months the family assumed they were dead. Then they started hearing rumors of people who sounded like them, but doing things like attending slave auctions. Inora and Áinfean are horrified by this news. Umbero says that the family sent in several operatives to try and establish contact but none of them were found. Then they disappeared again, only to reappear in Fairhaven. Beyro told him they had lost their memories but he wanted to be certain which is why he hid and watched in the baggage car. Inora asks about her family and Umbero says their families have been informed but told not to make contact until they can figure out what happened in all the time they were missing. Inora is quick to pledge to prove herself to reunite, Áinfean is angry that they are "on their own" and that Beyro was hiding things from them. They leave and Umbero's carriage detaches from the train, turning into a small airship and sailing off.
Everyone spends a little time catching up and planning for what they will do next when they get off the train. Áinfean gives Winter the jacket she purchased as a gift. When everyone falls asleep Thakharad wakes up in the dream world. There is a staircase, resembling a small statue he knows is a portal to the dreamworld. Thakharad wakes the others, and they ascend into the desert. At a camp of tents of logarithmic sizes they find a man in yellow. He introduces himself as The Yellow King, and wants to tell them about the book he is working on. They slowly come to realize that this is a portion of Haserton Lowls. Áinfean wonders if maybe their memories are also partial people stranded in the dream world, and if so if they can find their other selves.
They debate briefly but ultimately decide to try and get information out of him about where in the dreamworld he has traveled. They get information on 2 of the items from the list Lowls kept, the signet ring of Viscount Santigo ir'Brellen at the masquerade which was also the last day of his life, and the vampire skull in the tomb of a karnathi prince. Deciding they might have to meet Abdul Azaharad the mad poet in the Reflective Oasis they resolve to get gifts like Lowls did.
Áinfean changes into a masque and dress, and one by one most of the party does as well. Winter dresses Aramades and then dresses herself as a female hobgoblin to match. Beyro noticing Áinfean's pout offers his own escort which she's grateful for. They manage to get themselves to the masquerade and find an enormous manor with over 1,000 guests. Standing in the receiving line they are shocked to see a guest grabbed by a tendril and dragged to a dark portion of the ceiling. The guests pause each time this happens but otherwise don't react. The Viscount keeps coughing and they realize he is coughing up a black substance, a lot of it too.
Upashie comes over to them and Siegmeyer recognizes her as his rescuer the last time he was trapped here. She asks if they know how long she has been waiting for them to return. When they tell her they've lost their memories and don't remember having ever been here before she asks if they know where they are, and what happens here. When they say they know it's the last day of the Viscount's life but they don't know what happens she warns them to draw weapons.
