After successfully stopping the performance of The King in Yellow the group races off in the confusion. However a fireball detonates inside the main carriage, and looking out they are pursued by 2 carriages of nobles, dressed predominantly in yellow. Inora manages to get one carriage of pursuers with hypnotic pattern but the group takes a lot of damage as the other carriage comes on. Edouart and Adelard are thrown overboard, but Seigmeyer jumps onto the enemy carriage and sends Joanna for them, while Inora heals the group. Seigmeyer is knocked from the carriage into a cake shop, and Thakharad opens Hunger of Hadar on the remaining carriage. Only one horse emerges from the darkness, and eventually the screams stop, leaving only the other… unnatural sounds. Siegmeyer pays the shop owners for their cakes and windows and blocks a tanglefoot bag. Defeating the other cultist on foot Siegmeyer, Edouart and Adelard all rejoin the group.
Meanwhile on a different street a fireball also hits the open curricle Winter and Áinfean are in with Felix. Turning they are pursued by the actor who was portraying The King in Yellow on stage, riding a demonic looking horse breathing fire. Another carriage comes around the bend and they crash. Áinfean tells Felix they should split up, but apparently not used to taking real injury he doesn't move very far. Frustrated but injured herself Áinfean grabs Winter and thundersteps away. It takes some maneuvering across the rooftops but they slip the rider.
Back at The Wandering Treant the group reflects that things are all a mess and they probably don't want to be around to explain themselves. They were largely masked but the cultists know who and where they are. The decision is made to leave on the late night lightning rail. They say goodbye to their staff, and Áinfean pays her "assistants" to deliver a note, "once the streets are calm" which may or may not end up being tomorrow. Turning in the House Orien carriage they lose their deposit, but manage to pass off all the damage as from the riot.
Inora sees a shadow watching from another roof, but it vanishes. After finding out how depleted their funds are they don't have enough to take the lightning rail all the way. But they can get to the next major town easily enough if they ride coach.
Sheiruul Aramades was badly injured in the war, he lost a foot, part of his middle, ring and pinky fingers on one hand, and an eye. He has long had nightmares of his unit members dying in fire on The Day of Mourning. More recently that fire has had a black spot within and consumes more people, people who didn't die that day. Eventually it is so large he can see a "wrong" creature within, all eyes, teeth and skin like liquid black ink. Then he sees a group of figures driving back this monster, figures that resemble a group that just sat down a few rows over on the train.
A gnome named Copernicus Jinks bonds with Sheiruul over missing limbs (he has a glass hand) and they discuss politics. Sheiruul watches the group from his vision. Inora brings up the shadow she saw and the hobgobin watching them. Áinfean stalks over to ask if he knows them and why he is watching them.
While Áinfean accosts this hobgoblin, Inora receives a note. The note, from Dalf, tells Inora to meet him alone in the baggage car. Seigmeyer says that she should take back up, but the note says to come alone. Even pointing out the possibility of turning one of the group invisible is rejected. She does agree to Thakharad keeping a mental channel open.
The rest of the group relocates back to their seats while Sheiruul explains his vision and that he thinks they are the people he is supposed to help. It's strange… but not really that much stranger than what's happened to them so far, and he seems honest.
Inora calls for help.
