Upashie's warning gives the party time to turn and meet the tall featureless clawed creatures that enter the ballroom. During the ensuing fight Aramades' shadow blade is incredibly effective, where normal weapons are not. Beyro uses the blade to great effect while Siegmeyer helps to defend. Áinfean gets sucked up to the ceiling and Inora's quick spellcasting lights up the dark ceiling to reveal hideous gelatinous spider creatures eating the guests. Áinfean thundersteps away and begins shooting lightning at all the creatures on the ceiling, killing or driving them away. Eventually the foes fall, but Viscount Santigo ir'Brellen has collapsed vomiting up a black mass much larger than himself.
The group starts to fight but Upashie warns them that it's foolish to stay here, they should grab the ring and leave. They do so. However when the group wills themselves back to the oasis only Inora, Siegmeyer, and Beyro show up. Deciding to wait on the others, they speak to the Yellow King and get information on the next 2 items to acquire, the heartstone of a night hag, and a green statue guarded by shark people. Inora begins playing with summoning things into being in the dream realm.
Aramades arrives at the oasis alone, but out of the tent comes 12 members of his old squad. Speaking with them, Aramades becomes convinced that the Day of Mourning has banished them to the dream realm, and that they can be saved. Aramades is determined to find enough gifts that the Mad Poet will return his squad to the waking word. Going into the tent he is disappointed to be confronted by the Camel in Yellow instead of the Yellow King.
Back at the group oasis, Inora, having summoned a failed platter of grapes, a successful platter of grapes and a flying fortress that didn't last long, decides to create new life. She attempts to summon a creature she imagines as a giant dragonfly with eight sets of actual dragon wings. However instead she summons a Chuthlu-dragon, with the body of a dragonfly, 8 dragon wings, and a head that is a horrible cross of a squid and copper dragon. The creature kills her. Siegmeyer drives it off, but doesn't slay it, releasing it into the dreamworld at large.
Inora wakes up on the train where Copernicus Jinx is showing off his cat's cradle to the Beyro' boys. After expressing surprise that she is awake, Copernicus hands off his glowing cat's cradle to the boys and they attack her. She attempts to awaken Seigmeyer to no avail. While Perrin strangles her with the cat's cradle, Copernicus offers her a trade, flute for a fireball. She resists, but when nearing death, again, gives in. After destroying her attackers, Copernicus says "this is my stop" and exists the train into a hellscape that is continuously disintegrating and reforming.
Upashie arrives in the oasis, concerned. She has been gone a few years by her reckoning and fills them in on how the dream world works. 1) If you fail to travel somewhere or die you usually end up in a nightmare. 2) time moves differently across the areas of the dreamworld, with the oasis moving closest to real time. 3) summoning living cognizant beings is a horrible idea. 4) If someone wakes you in the real world it should recall you, but this can be interfered with if you've had a nightcap.
Beyro had a nightcap.
